As you know, a little over a month ago Haiti was hit by Hurricane Isaac which left parts of the country in greater need. We have delivered more trucks of water to some of the hardest hit areas in and around Jacmel. We have also conducted a survey on how Hurricane Isaac effected their drinking water. The results of which were not a surprise to WWB, other than the amount of money Haitians are paying for water. The report will be posted shortly.

Isaac Report.

Friday and Saturday August 23 and 24th 2012, Hurricane Isaac hit Haiti and left behind deaths, homelessness, destroy houses, garden, animals …….the aggressive Isaac was very impressive for all Haitians. Comparatively in 2008 Haiti was more prepared. The preparedness reduces the venerability of the Country in term of geographical, deforestation and the quality of life of the population and also the lack of leadership of the Haitian Authorities on the Territory management.

The local authorities and the “Societe civile” established different strategies for preparedness in the whole Southeast Department of Haiti in coordination with the mayors, ASEC, CASEC in all “communes and section communal in the Southeast department.

The Centre d’Operation d’ Urgence (COU) is the entity similar with the “EOC” Emergency Operation Center in the US. This entity coordinates by the délégué départemental Mr Pierre Michel LAFONTANT and the Direction de la Protection Civile (DPC).

We realize our own assessment and the assessment of different humanitarians partners all the assessments coordinate by COU to produce a partially report. The impact of Isaac shows firsthand the death, injuries, damages houses, and destroys houses, Gardens, homelessness in the shelters and animals who get killed in the Hurricane.

Immediate actions:

Distribution Hygiene kits + education and sensibilisation on Cholera: many latrines destroyed or in the flooding / Risk of Cholera/ Typhoid’s and malaria

Security Kits: material to repair the damages houses (nails, woods, metal roof…Cortex (girl or women), mattresses, sheets, kitchen materials, food……

We are happy to report we are doing something to help but we should be doing more. We have sent trainers into the smaller towns outside of Jacmel to teach the children proper hygiene and sanitation practices. This is of great importance in helping to stop the Cholera outbreak. We are also working with the Jacmel Rotary Club to raise funds to install a latrine. I am happy to tell you they have over $700 dollars towards the first one at the cost of $1100 dollars each. We will tell you more about the summer camp in the next newsletter.
